Well stated. I truly believe that if the country as a whole were more willing to have a true reckoning with it's factual past rather than the whitewashed version, many of these contradictions would be lessened. It is hard to not have contradictions when we are not even being honest with ourselves about our ugly past.

It is interesting that you posted this tonight as I was thinking about the importance of a reckoning with our past just today when I saw a young black man with his daughter who was around 7 yrs old at a store I was at. As he passed by me he clearly was answering a question the daughter had asked and he stated, "This country was built on the backs of slaves and immigrants." He probably thought I was weird when I saw him again a bit later in the store and stopped him to say how impressed I was by his honesty with his daughter about our country's history because far too many people don't understand the true history because it has been whitewashed and that our country really needs to have a reckoning with it's past so it can finally move forward, grow, change, and actually improve rather than continually refight the same battles. I told him I thought he was showing what a great father he was. I hope he didn't think I was just some crazy white woman.
