Today, I’m struck by the numerous contradictions at work in our country.
America is a country that constantly lectures other countries about freedom and civil rights, but has a long, continuous history of suppressing the freedom and civil rights of some of its citizens
One of America’s two main political our parties positions itself as the party of law and order and patriotism, but that same party was the instigator and supporter of the most openly treasonous attack on our republic, and killed and injured police officers while they were doing it
Many people belonging to that same political party argue that the last presidential election was stolen by voter fraud, yet that party is also passing state voting laws that will prevent certain segments of voters from voting
Many American Christians cannot separate their faith and their love of Jesus, even though the Bible makes it clear that He is to take supremacy over everything, including your country
America takes pride in being a first world country that has made numerous scientific and technological advancements, but has a large segment of the populace that are suspicious of science and technology
America was formed and founded by immigrants, yet the country is highly suspicious of certain immigrants who come to America
America is a proud, arrogant country that holds itself in the highest regard, but its history and present behavior suggests that it should be a lot more modest
Well stated. I truly believe that if the country as a whole were more willing to have a true reckoning with it's factual past rather than the whitewashed version, many of these contradictions would be lessened. It is hard to not have contradictions when we are not even being honest with ourselves about our ugly past.
It is interesting that you posted this tonight as I was thinking about the importance of a reckoning with our past just today when I saw a young black man with his daughter who was around 7 yrs old at a store I was at. As he passed by me he clearly was answering a question the daughter had asked and he stated, "This country was built on the backs of slaves and immigrants." He probably thought I was weird when I saw him again a bit later in the store and stopped him to say how impressed I was by his honesty with his daughter about our country's history because far too many people don't understand the true history because it has been whitewashed and that our country really needs to have a reckoning with it's past so it can finally move forward, grow, change, and actually improve rather than continually refight the same battles. I told him I thought he was showing what a great father he was. I hope he didn't think I was just some crazy white woman.
