How Black people in America survive from day to day is nothing short of miraculous.
Minnesota hasn’t finished prosecuting Derek Chauvin for George Floyd’s murder, and now they have Daunte Wright’s murder to investigate.
Many White people might not understand him fleeing the Minneapolis police when the entirety of his guilt consisted of hanging an air freshener in his car.
But he was probably thinking of George Floyd, also of Minneapolis.
And Caron Nazario of Virginia, who was potentially guilty of having a missing license plate on his SUV. He was harassed at gunpoint, pepper-sprayed, and thrown to the ground.
Who doesn’t understand people fleeing out of fear?
Who wouldn’t potentially do the same?
When you’re not sure that the police officers you encounter see you as a human being.
When you don’t know if you will survive the encounter.
We run or drive for our lives.
We are not lucky enough to be All-American.
We are not fortunate enough to be White mass murderers who are routinely arrested without incident.
We are just going about our Black lives, hoping that those lives will matter to law enforcement.
But much too often, they don’t.
The proof is in the bloody pudding.
