Viktor Orban – The GOP’s Second Favorite Fascist
The Hungarian totalitarian is beloved by Republican reactionaries.
Today’s Republican Party has a love affair. Someone whose words and actions evoke unbridled affection and wistful desires.
It’s not the former president. Of course, they love and adore him as well, although there are signs that the long-standing romance is showing signs of strain.
No, I’m referring to Viktor Orban, the ultra-reactionary Prime Minister of Hungary. Those who worship our American Nightmare have sung his praises for a long time.
He’s set to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas next week, where he will find a captive, rapturous audience who has dreams of installing his Central European brand of totalitarianism in America.
He is still the featured speaker at CPAC despite his recent speech where he spewed anti-immigration venom, saying
"This is why we have always fought: We are willing to mix with one another, but we do not want to become peoples of mixed race."
He was also callous enough to make a Holocaust joke. Talking about the European Commission’s goal to reduce gas usage by 15%, he said
"I do not see how it will be enforced -- although, as I understand it, the past shows us German know-how on that."
His remarks caused one long-time aide to resign and inspired angry retorts from the International Auschwitz Committee.
Making racist, nativist, and anti-Semitic comments are nothing new for Orban. Here’s a sampling of some of his other missives:
· “Hungary does not need a single migrant for the economy to work or the population to sustain itself or for the country to have a future.”
· “There is a clear link between illegal migrants coming to Europe and the spread of terrorism.”
· “I think that with Donald Trump, the United States will have a president who is not ideologically limited; that is, he is an open person, much more interested in success, efficiency, and results than political theories.”
Matt Gaetz, Tom Cotton, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Josh Hawley of the world will hang on his every word, and so will one of his biggest fanboys, Tucker Carlson.
Let’s be clear. The most imminent threat to our republic is not immigrants, Islam, socialism, socialism, or lack of supposed Christian morals and values.
The real danger is fascism.
Fascism like that espoused by the former president and his minions.
Fascism like that of Viktor Orban.
