The Unfortunate Truths
So many opinions are being offered on why the former president is now the president-elect.
The Democrats’ message was wrong.
Working people were ignored.
Trans rights were discussed too much.
Biden should have pulled out of the race earlier.
And so on.
All of these are wrong.
The reasons that America is staring into a sociopolitical abyss are simple.
Racism and sexism.
That’s it. Those are the reasons.
It didn’t matter when or how long Kamala Harris’ campaign began.
Her messaging wasn’t off.
The hopes, dreams, and desires of many people were well-articulated.
The problem is that a large majority of this country didn’t care to elect a president who would lead with sincerity, authenticity, and hope.
They wanted a racist, sexist White man who has the personality of a toddler and the disposition of a goat.
Racists are always racists, but they attempt to disguise their racism.
They used to say that segregation was “the natural order of things.”
They used to say that “states’ rights” was the best form of representative government.
Simultaneously, they enshrined Jim Crow laws.
Lynched Blacks whether they were dissenting or not.
Disenfranchised us from voting and having equal education.
America has always been a de facto and de jure racist country.
Racist according to the law and racist in practice.
Now, it will be more so.
America has always been a sexist country.
A lot more sexist than most countries.
Most countries have already elected their first female head of state.
Not America.
America prefers women to conveniently available.
America wants women to be compliant and docile.
America doesn’t want women to have bodily autonomy.
America doesn’t want women to have equal rights.
That’s the America we live in now.
That’s the America we have always lived in.
America could have done the right thing in 2016, but it did not.
America could have done the right thing on November 5, but it did not.
The Democratic Party did not make a mistake in nominating Kamala Harris.
The party did not err in believing that she was the vastly more qualified and sensible candidate.
Those of us who supported her were not wrong.
Our fault is underestimating our depraved electorate.
We assumed that people saw and heard enough racism and sexism.
We thought logic and reason would prevail.
We thought the majority of Americans would reject racism, sexism, nativism, homophobia, and fascism.
We were wrong, to our horror and shame.
The entire nation will have to suffer the consequences of this grave mistake.
Whatever the next four years and beyond brings, we cannot and should not misdiagnose the maladies that plague this country.
America is not “woke.”
America is not being destroyed from “others.”
America is being destroyed from within by hatred and ignorance.
