“Why do I have to have a Marvel (movie) that’s all women? Not that I have anything against women, but why do I have to do that? Why can’t I have Marvels that are both? Why do I need an all-Black cast?" – Nelson Peltz
Judging from the quote above, it’s plain to see how Peltz’s presence on Disney’s Board of Directors would negatively impact women, People of Color, and make people like the former president and Ron DeSantis incredibly happy.
This kind of casual, banal racism is the kind of deeply entrenched sexism and racism that Women and People of Color have to deal with every day.
The same kind of sexism and racism that misogynists and racists say doesn’t exist.
Women and minorities are always criticized for doing our own thing.
“Why do we have Black History Month?”
“Why do we have Women’s History Month?”
“It’s discriminatory to have Hispanic Heritage Month!”
“Why can’t we stop having these separate holidays and commemorations?”
Why?
Because you won’t let us equal part in society.
If it weren’t for legally enforced integration, there never would have been integration.
If it weren’t for affirmative action, most minorities would not have had a chance to demonstrate their talents and abilities.
If it weren’t for federal agencies like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, many women wouldn’t have been hired and promoted.
Women didn’t create discriminatory gender distinctions.
Men did.
Blacks didn’t create the concept of race.
White people did.
We didn’t create this oppressive environment, but we are forced to live under it.
We live in a world rife with prejudice, discrimination, and sexism.
Living under the perception of being less than White men.
When we dare to create our own spaces, spaces for us by us, we’re ridiculed as being separatists.
It would be a lot more intellectually honest for some White people, for some White men to just say,
“You can’t win.
Whatever you do, think, or say will be wrong.
Why?
Because we said so.”
