Something in The Water in Georgia
Why does the Peach State consistently have some of the worst members of Congress?
I’m a proud Atlantan, and for the most part, a proud Georgian.
Proud that our state came through when our country needed us most, and help to dethrone a contemptible tyrant.
Proud that we elected two new US Senators who are a credit to our state and the nation.
Proud of many things.
But not proud of our overall history of electing senators and congresspeople.
Quite frankly, we’ve elected too many psychopaths and evildoers to Congress.
Examples:
Richard Russell, one of the most virulent White Supremacists in Congressional history. Once a friend of LBJ, he opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and used the filibuster and every parliamentary trick available to thwart integration (BTW, his name should be removed from the Senate office building in Washington and the federal courthouse in Atlanta that bear his name)
Larry McDonald, a right-wing yahoo and a representative embarrassment on every level. This John Burch society member was so nutty he suggested that Rudolf Hess should nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House who is one of the architects of comingling the Christian Right with the Republican Party, and who will forever be tarred by his work to destroy goodwill and cooperation between the Republican and Democratic parties. The political animosity American politics suffers from today is a direct result of Gingrich’s efforts to create an “us vs. them” mentality in the GOP.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, who believes that “Jewish space lasers” were responsible for the California Wildfires, and who is one of the current Congress’ chief obstructionists.
Andrew Clyde, who said in a House Oversight Committee meeting on the January 6 riot that calling it an insurrection “is a bald-faced lie,” and
“if you didn't know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit"
With representation like this, it’s a wonder that the Peach State hasn’t been expelled from the Union.
