Resistance Isn't Futile
Living with the current state of affairs is not for wimps.
Every day brings horrifying news – cabinet appointments from the pit of hell, new laws meant to enshrine discrimination of every sort, and geopolitical posturing of the most absurd variety.
And yet…
We must not give in or give up.
Apathy is part of the reason we are where we are, combined with racism, sexism, nativism, and other evil forces.
Apathy is what the ruling government is counting on.
The shock-and-awe decrees.
The Executive Orders – some carrying some weight, others carrying none.
A blitzkrieg, not of firepower, but of the legislative variety is meant to make us feel defeated.
They want us to capitulate.
They want us to feel helpless.
This is what fascism is and this how it conducts its business until it has total control.
But this government was elected.
Which is both a blessing and a curse.
The curse part being that a significant part of our citizenry was so impressed by the first-round carnage that they signed up the nation for a potentially fatal second round.
The blessing part is that we elected the scoundrels.
We’re not in full police-state mode.
Yet.
While we can protest safely, we must protest.
While we can organize openly, we must organize.
The first line of defense must be the Democratic Party.
Those elected to Congress, our governors, mayors, state and local legislatures must organize a resistance.
They must make plans that are carefully and strategically organized and carried out.
They must hold out, block, obstruct, and use every legal avenue to curtail this administration.
After that, it’s up to us.
We must form new alliance and organizations.
We must reform and revive old alliances and organizations.
We’re known for being fractured.
We’ve lost ground because of our lack of unity.
But we can no longer afford to be disunified.
There is a government and quasi-government (Elon Musk) at work seeking to dismantle safeguards and protections, rules and regulations, and health and safety mechanisms all in the guise of reducing our government and ridding it of waste.
Our ability to know and understand what our government is doing is being curtailed.
Our sovereign rights for equal representation under the law, to reap the benefits of taxes paid and monies withheld is being compromised.
If we do not resist, if we don’t fight back, we will be making it easier for them to take full control.
If we allow that, they will not permit dissent.
They will not allow debate.
Today, they are actively working to destroy a woman’s ability to have reproductive freedom.
Tomorrow, they will restrict her ability to make other personal choices.
Today, they are using the term DEI to repeal any vestiges of fair and equal opportunity.
Tomorrow, they will restrict where minorities will live, what jobs they will hold, and decide what freedoms they will or won’t have.
Today, they are pledging to disallow transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Tomorrow, transgendered people, along with other LGBTQIA+ people will be the subject of more restrictive and discriminatory laws.
Before the election, some said that the warnings issued were rhetoric and political nonsense.
After the election, we must act so we won’t find out how far they are willing to go.
Before the election, Palestinians activists didn’t want to support Kamala Harris because she was in office with “Genocide Joe.”
After the election, the president they helped to elect via apathy now wants to turn Gaza into a US-controlled resort, giving terrorists more reason to target American civilians.
Before the election, people said “Vote third party. We need to move away from this antiquated two-party system.”
After the election, the same people are concerned that we will move to a one-party or no-party system.
There will be time to make a forensic analysis of how we got here.
When this is over.
For now, we must make our voices heard.
We must write and call our elected officials.
We must declare our discontent loudly and consistently.
We must agitate until there is no further need to agitate.
We have no choice but to resist.
