Another day passes and the MAGA hypocrisy train keep rolling along.
Right-wingers are aghast at Tom Hanks’ portrayal of “Doug,” a MAGA hat-wearing contestant on a “Black Jeopardy” skit on the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary special.
At one point, Doug refuses to shake the hand of Black host Kenan Thompson. Predictably, MAGA faithful lost their stuff:
“Tom Hanks went on SNL dressed like a slob mocking millions of Trump supporters - portraying them as dumb, racist, rednecks. Keep it up libs. You'll never win another election again.”
“SNL decided it was a good idea to depict Tom Hanks as a “Racist Trump Supporter” in a MAGA Hat afraid to shake a black man’s hand. Donald Trump just won a landslide election and has never been more popular with Americans. They have learned nothing.”
“SNL'S TONE-DEAF MOMENT: TOM HANKS AS RACIST TRUMP SUPPORTER FALLS FLAT Hollywood still doesn't get it: Portraying Trump supporters as racist caricatures while he's winning record minority support. SNL's trying 2016 jokes in 2025.”
As Abby Phillip correctly pointed out on CNN, these were the same folks that were saying that Americans were too sensitive when a so-called comedian called Puerto Rico “a garbage dump.”
What makes this particular bit of hypocrisy so laughable is that just over a month ago, Bruce Fischer, the husband of a Republican Senator from Nebraska, very publicly refused to shake the hand of Kamala Harris.
After shaking hands with Deb Fischer, Harris tried to shake hands with Fischer’s husband, but he refused her handshake.
The “Doug” character was demonstrating a painful truth.
Painful to the president’s supporters, but a fact to his detractors.
There are some who refuse to categorize the president’s supporters as racists.
Joy Behar from The View, an outspoken opponent of the president said:
“The fact remains that they’re making anyone who voted for (the president) look like a racist. And that’s why they’re mad.”
“I personally would never do that because I don’t believe that any group is one thing. A lot of these people, in my opinion, have been misled. They thought that grocery prices would come down. They’re up. They thought inflation was coming down. It’s up. They thought Medicaid was safe. It’s not. They thought social security was safe. It’s not.”
Behar may not think that the president’s supporters are racists, but there are many who believe that racism is their default.
One can plead, as Behar does, that they have been misled.
But from the perspective of People of Color, there’s only so much misleading one can perpetrate before you can reasonably deduce that someone was ripe for fooling.
Why does the “misled” MAGAs oppose DEI?
Why don’t they want others to have the same benefits and privileges that they enjoy or aspire to enjoy?
Racism.
Being misled is not an excuse for racism.
Ignorance is not an excuse for racism.
If MAGAs weren’t racist, they could take a joke like we’re supposed to take a “joke.”
As far as most Black people are concerned, all MAGAs are racists.
Proving otherwise would seem to require a higher cost than they are willing to pay.
