Fifty-six years ago,
A dreamer died.
And with him, it seems,
His dreams, hopes and wishes died with him.
Fifty-six years later,
The dream is still only a dream.
Voting rights restricted.
Racial discrimination rampant.
The police still murdering.
Our men, women, and children.
Some dreams are fulfilled,
But some never realized.
Some dreams are based on the good will of others.
Those are the tenuous ones.
The ones with the least chance of coming true.
It’s a shame all these years later,
Racial reconciliation is still a dream.
Not enough laws.
Not enough empathy.
Not enough love or understanding.
The dreamer saw things as they ought to be.
It’s still up to us to make his dream a reality.
Until then, his dream is a million miles away.
A faint hope, a wish unfulfilled.
