Forget the Handwringing and Focus on the Truth
Let's take a deep breath and smell what the GOP is cooking
The sky fell in late beginning Thursday night.
Panic filled social media, and people were losing their ever-loving minds.
The editorial boards of the New York Times and my hometown newspaper the Atlanta Journal-Constitution both asked for the president to step aside.
Fortunately, days later, cooler heads are mostly prevailing.
The commander-in-chief looked and sounded better the next day in North Carolina.
Amazingly, a cold and a raspy voice doesn’t mean the end of the republic.
A poor debate performance doesn’t correlate with the ability to lead.
Biden’s debate performance doesn’t count.
What does count?
The inability of the Republican Party to disassociate themselves from a convicted felon.
The fact that one of the two major American political parties can’t do better than proffering a racist, misogynist, nativist dunderhead as its candidate.
The appalling lack of courage and forthrightness from most of the American media.
Where are the calls for the former president to withdraw?
When he was convicted of thirty-four felonies, how many editorial boards published front page pieces asking him to step aside?
What’s more important – a poor debate performance or the risk of reelecting an amoral, malevolent misanthrope?
When I called the Journal-Constitution to cancel my subscription (I’d written off the Times a long time ago), they were prepared for calls like mine, and asked me what I thought about the editorial.
I told them I thought it was cowardly and spineless.
Democrats should not act the same.
The world’s leading democracy is at stake.
Do we want an imperfect, but a decently functioning government, or do we want the novel 1984 to come off the page and come to life?
Do we want to give more power to a party and a person who has perverted the Supreme Court, encouraged the erasure of church/state separation, and severely curtailed personal rights, voting rights, and environmental legislation?
Do we want to live in America or Gilead?
1940s Germany?
2024 Russia?
I know what I want, and I know that I’m not alone.
The only thing that remains is what we do to preserve our weathered, tattered union, or what we do to ensure its destruction.
Thank you. I dropped both my Washington Post and NYT subscription last fall. I saw how far they went with the "both sidesisms". They bent over backward to try and scare people about Biden's age while at the same time ignoring the convicted felon age being only 4 years younger than Biden. They also ignored the clear distinction in health with Biden being an active man and the convicted felon too lazy to even carry his own golf clubs. I won't even get into how they treat the mental states and truth vs lies in regards to both men. I now follow people whom I respect to tell me the facts via newsletters. You are one of those people.
