Chances are you’ve heard of Charlie Kirk.
He’s one of those right-wing, racist mouthpieces that feigns being Christian while being patently un-Christlike.
Along with his reactionary brethren, he’s been piling on DEI (Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion) policies, claiming that these policies are responsible for recent airline calamities.
He said,
“I’m sorry. If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, ‘Boy, I hope he’s qualified.”
When his comments drew a predictably outraged response, he said he made a “logical statement,” and continued,
“Of course, there are qualified black and female pilots. But when you socially engineer racial quotas that far outstrip current demographics in a given field—especially one where the lives of passengers are on the line—it is fair to question whether someone receives the job because they’re the best or because they’re politically expedient. Screaming racism doesn’t make the plane land safely.”
Kirk had made a name for himself passing off racist swill like this as if it’s logical, reasonable thinking.
I’d love for Kirk to explain why DEI policies that help to equalize the effects of hundreds of years of racist policies are wrong, but White people getting into Harvard via legacy programs is acceptable.
When these children of former graduates walk those halls of ivy, no one looks at them and asks, “I wonder if he/she is qualified to be here?”
But to prejudiced people like Kirk, there’s no double standard at work. Somehow, White people benefitting from legacies and the Good Old Boy network is perfectly acceptable.
White people getting advantages is natural.
But Black people trying to advance by laws and policies passed to redress years of racial discrimination is ridiculous.
Only Whites benefit from his so-called meritocracy-focused society.
And Kirk knows it.
They attack DEI because it helps to level a catastrophically uneven playing field.
But they don’t want the playing field level.
They won’t be satisfied until Black people are once again subject to the whims of White people.
But that’s not going to happen.
We live in a different world.
We haven’t gone far enough, but we won’t be going that far backwards.
There will be starts and stops, but progress is not going to be thwarted.
Charlie Kirk doesn’t want Black people treated like human beings.
We won’t rest until we are.
