A Strange "Day of Love"
According to the former president, January 6 was a violent, riotous love-in.
The former president has called January 6 a “Day of Love.”
When challenged about the events of that day, he said:
"There were no guns down there. We didn’t have guns. The others had guns, but we didn’t have guns. And when I say we, these are people that walked down — this was a tiny percentage of the overall which nobody sees and nobody, nobody shows. But that was a day of love."
What a romantically myopic way to remember that day. Let’s look back at the events of that “day of love.”
Let’s state the obvious fact that a mob doesn’t need guns.
The sheer number of people, estimated at 2,000 to 2,500, whipped into an insurrection frenzy by the former president, overwhelmed armed Capitol police who did their best not to use deadly force.
They didn’t come singing “We Shall Overcome.”
They didn’t approach the Capitol wearing flowers in their hair.
They came as an invading horde.
They were “regular citizens” augmented by Proud Boys and Oath Keepers White Supremacists groups.
They were rabid dogs who treated the Capitol building like their restroom, smearing feces.
They smashed windows and doors, broke into offices and took selfies.
They assaulted police.
Officer Daniel Hodges was crushed in a doorway while trying to secure the Capitol.
Officer Michael Fanone was burned, tazed, beaten with pipes, and sprayed with chemicals. He suffered traumatic brain injuries and PTSD.
Office Brian Sicknick, who defended the Capitol that day, suffered two strokes and died.
So much for a day of love.
The former president continually tries to convince us that all we saw and heard that day was a lie.
We’re supposed to ignore his speech where he incited riot and rebellion against his own country, the country whose constitution he took an oath to protect and defend.
We’re supposed to overlook that the police protecting the Capitol were cursed and viciously attacked by the same people who supposedly “back the blue.”
Somehow, we’re expected to forget rioters who while being “loving” committed millions of dollars in property damage.
Ever since January 6, the former president has lied about his role in the riot and the actions of the rioters.
He acted contrary to the oaths he took as president, and performed as an agent provocateur, attempting to stage a coup d’etat to reinstate himself as president.
He is patently, obviously unfit to be President of the United States, and by all laws and statutes should be at in prison for treason.
A true day of love for this country and our national conscience will be the day he goes to prison for the rest of his life.
